The City of Melfort grew by nearly 600 people last year, a 10 per cent jump in the population. That's nearly eight times the provincial average.
Darrelynn Fair moved her family to Melfort from Alberta in August to open the new Canalta Hotel, and she says it is a great choice for both raising a family and running a business. "We built a hotel in Melfort because it is the gateway to the northeast. And we see a lot of future development, lots of lakes, lots of recreation, and we felt it was a great fit for the community."
Though Melfort is a small city compared to Saskatoon and Regina, Fair says it has everything a person needs.
Brent Lutz, the community development manager for Melfort says the location is also a great place for outdoor enthusiasts. "Living in the northeast, you're close to a lot of lakes and recreation areas. Within 30 minutes you can be at four regional parks, fishing, skiing, a host of outdoor activities."
With so many people moving to places in the province, the housing industry is booming.
Ryan Tremblay, owner of Tremblay Construction, works on many of the new houses in Melfort, and believes that business is good for both the construction industry and those looking to buy. "Prices are good but still, I would say a little cheaper than living in the big cities, so I think it's good for both sides."
With fair house prices, thriving business and so much to do, Lutz says it's no surprise Melfort led the province in growth last year.
"We've always been proud of our community, and it's really refreshing to see people recognizing the value of our community and choosing to live here."

Canalta Hotels signs soap recycling partnership with Clean the World
Recycling guest room amenities promotes environmental awareness and sustainability at 33 Canalta Hotel properties in Western Canada (operating as Canalta, Ramada, Super 8 and Travelodge brands)
Drumheller, Alberta (Canada) and Orlando, Fla. (USA) - Dec. 1, 2010 - Canalta Hotels, a division of Canalta Group, advances its already strong reputation for eco - awareness by teaming with U.S. - based Clean the World to collect, recycle and distribute hotel soaps and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners, and lotions) for people in need throughout Canada and more than 40 countries worldwide.
Housekeeping staff at 33 hotel properties in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, including select Canalta, Ramada, Super 8 and Travelodge locations, will collect gently used soaps and bottled amenities from guest rooms each day.
Soaps and other hygiene - related items will be recycled in Vancouver at one of two Canadian recycling centers affiliated with Clean the World. The products will be sanitized and distributed by Clean the World wherever there is a need, such as in response to the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti.
"We all feel very good in knowing that our recycling efforts are going to help with the dire situation occurring right now in Haiti," says Brooke Christianson, vice president of Canalta Hotels. "We have stock piles of hotel soaps that Clean the World will be able to send right away to the people of Haiti because of this relationship with Clean the World. Prior to this agreement we struggled to find a way to recycle our soap. Now we've found the solution."
Clean the World, founded in 2009, works with travel and hospitality industry partners through an innovative hotel amenities recycling program that helps ensure a steady flow of otherwise - discarded soaps and shampoos to the people who need them most.
By cleaning and distributing these products to impoverished people, thousands of deaths caused by hygiene related illnesses, such as acute respiratory diseases and diarrheal diseases, can be prevented every day.
In less than two years Clean the World has partnered with more than 550 hotel properties in 47 states and eight provinces in Canada. Hotel partners represent major brands, such as The Walt Disney World Resorts, Harrah's Resorts, Mandarin Oriental, Westgate Resorts and Four Seasons. The organization has collected and distributed more than six million soap bars to people in need.
Clean the World's recycling efforts have helped divert nearly 390 tons (780,000 lbs.) of hotel soaps and bottled amenities from polluting landfills in North America. Each day in Canada alone, more than 50,000 lbs. of hotel soaps are discarded after guest use.
"Canada provides a tremendous market for us as it relates to reaching environmentally focused hotel partners and guests," says Shawn Seipler, executive director at Clean the World. "A partnership with Canalta Hotels extends our reach in western Canada and supports Canalta's already proud reputation for eco - awareness and sustainability. We know they will be an active participant in advancing our global hygiene revolution."
Canalta Hotels has a long - standing reputation of environmental excellence. Its "Go Green" initiatives have drawn national attention by the Hotel Association of Canada's Green Key ECOmmodation Rating Program for involving employees in the process of improving overall environmental awareness.
"Over the past three years Canalta Hotels has made significant progress in ensuring its hotels are operating in as environmentally responsible a way as possible," says Sam McCurry, Green Team captain for Canalta Hotels.
"Our overall goal is simple: reduce our demand on non - renewable resources, such as power and water, but also to decrease as much hotel waste as possible. Clean the World has allowed us to take another step toward achieving these goals."
Clean the World has soap recycling partnerships with more than 80 hotels from coast to coast in Canada with more growth expected in the coming months.
